I wanted to set out some basic knitting instructions as a refresher so here it is. As we know, all knitted fabrics are made using two basic stitches, knit and purl.
Take it from me, when you knit-it-yourself, it feels good! In securing the previous stitch in a wale, the next stitch can pass through the previous loop either from below or above. It has slowed somewhat, but its enduring nature is a testament to both the relaxation it bestows on the practitioner, and the joy of craftsmanship.
A great variety of synthetic dyes have been developed since the synthesis of indigo dye in the mid-19th century; however, natural dyes are often favored, although they are generally less brilliant. A second potential difficulty is that the knitted piece will slide off the tapered end of the needles when unattended; this is prevented by "point protectors" that cap the tapered ends. The choice available is vast and the decision depends on what garment you want to create.
