jersey knits fabrics

I wanted to set out some basic knitting instructions as a refresher so here it is. Knitting is no longer only for grandmothers or just any mothers.

Knitting is the delicate balance of holding needles and continuously feeding yarn until a pattern emerges. For comparison, woven garments stretch mainly along one direction (the bias) and not very much, unless they are woven from stretchable material such as Lycra. Patterns and pictures can be created in knitted fabrics by using knit and purl stitches as "pixels"; however, such pixels are usually rectangular, rather than square, depending on the gauge of the knitting.

Cable patterns are made by permuting the order of stitches; although one or two stitches may be held by hand or knit out of order, cables of three or more generally require a cable needle. There are two kinds of knitting, weft knitting and warp knitting. Extra curvature can be introduced into knitted garments without seams, as in the heel of a sock; the effect of darts, flares, etc.

While knitting patterns can offer suggestions for design and color ideas, it is ultimately up to the artist to decide what the final product what look like. Knit it like you would knit any stitch.
