New wales can be begun from any of the edges of a knitted fabric; this is known as picking up stitches and is the basis for entrelac, in which the wales run perpendicular to one another in a checkerboard pattern. It is a good idea to keep the knitting yarn draped over the right forefinger, this keeps it to the back of the work too. The local yarn store will often provide assistance if you are having trouble with your pattern, regardless of whether you purchased your knitting supplies from them or a competitor.

For those of us who knit, there is almost nothing more relaxing than watching a row of neat, organized stitches line up on your knitting needles. These fiber types are chemically different, corresponding to proteins, carbohydrates and synthetic polymers, respectively. If you don't have one the you can just place the knitting on a fresh towel.

Some yarns are dyed to be either variegated (changing color every few stitches in a random fashion) or self-striping (changing every few rows). Other factors include allergenicity; speed of drying; resistance to chemicals, moths, and mildew; melting point and flammability; retention of static electricity; and the propensity to become stained and to accept dyes.
