Knitting is worked in rounds (the equivalent of rows in flat knitting) in a spiral. Knit One Purl Two happens to be one of the most well known knitting terms, well known by non-knitters and knitters alike.
A ribber is put on the machine, after the hem and purl stitches are made. For this reason, knitting was initially developed for garments that must be elastic or stretch in response to the wearer's motions, such as socks and hosiery. In weaving, the threads are always straight, running parallel either lengthwise (warp threads) or crosswise (weft threads).
In the more complex double knitting, two or more yarns alternate repeatedly within one row and all the yarns must be carried along the row, as seen in Fair Isle sweaters. Skeins and balls are generally sold with a yarn-band, a label that describes the yarn's weight, length, dye lot, fiber content, washing instructions, suggested needle size, likely gauge, etc. To keep warm in winter choose a chunky knitting yarn, some two ply yarns contain fifteen percent wool.
But, that's the essence of knitting. You watch it come to life as you go, and little by little, your knitting becomes reality.
