For many people one of the most enjoyable aspects of the craft is browsing through the many yarns available in a knitting shop. Knitting is worked in rounds (the equivalent of rows in flat knitting) in a spiral.
Sport weight yarns are also used in the machine. These meandering loops can be stretched easily in different directions, which gives knitting much more elasticity than woven fabrics; depending on the yarn and knitting pattern, knitted garments can stretch as much as 500%. Records show that the first sweaters were knit in the 17th century; before that smaller pieces and undergarments were knit.
We're all crazy busy, and finding time to make hand-knit gifts might seem completely impossible. Various closures for the garments, such as frogs and buttons can be added; usually buttonholes are knitted into the garment, rather than cut. During knitting, the active stitches are secured mechanically, either from individual hooks (in knitting machines) or from a knitting needle or frame in hand-knitting.
Most new knitters should start with some of the basic patterns listed above and work on mastering basic stitches. Be sure to try using other available resources, such as local craft and hobby stores.
