knit cancer hat

Knitting is worked in rounds (the equivalent of rows in flat knitting) in a spiral. I wanted to set out some basic knitting instructions as a refresher so here it is.

The knitting yarn will look like it is at the front and you will now take it to the back and start the second row of transferring stitches to the empty right needle. Extra curvature can be introduced into knitted garments without seams, as in the heel of a sock; the effect of darts, flares, etc. However, such circular wales are possible using Swiss darning, a form of embroidery, or by knitting a tube separately and attaching it to the knitted fabric.

The single yarns may be dyed separately before plying, or afterwards to give the yarn a uniform look. Cable needles are typically very short (a few inches), and are used to hold stitches temporarily while others are being knitted. By using simple stitches, a person will be able to create a blanket.

Even a beginner can make a simple scarf with novelty yarn in just a few hours, and have it look just fantastic. Most new knitters should start with some of the basic patterns listed above and work on mastering basic stitches.
