For many people one of the most enjoyable aspects of the craft is browsing through the many yarns available in a knitting shop. Knitting is worked in rounds (the equivalent of rows in flat knitting) in a spiral.

Even though knitting machines have advanced greatly in the last 500 years or so, however, hand knitting is still very much alive, as a very popular hobby. To secure a stitch, at least one new loop is passed through it. In lace knitting, the pattern is formed by making small, stable holes in the fabric, generally with yarn overs.

If the former, the stitch is denoted as a knit stitch; if the latter, as a purl stitch. All you need to start knitting are knitting needles, yarn and good patterns or instructions. For comparison, woven garments stretch mainly along one direction (the bias) and not very much, unless they are woven from stretchable material such as Lycra.

But, that's the essence of knitting. Once you learn the basics of knitting, you will want to continue progressing to more advanced stitches and knitting patterns.
